The NES was released in 1986 in the United States by Nintendo of America. Although it was technologically inferior to the Sega Master System, another system of the time, it had the advantage of some of the greatest game companies. Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, River City Ransom, Super Mario Brothers, The Legend of Zelda, Rampage, and literally hundreds of other games made this video game system the success that it was.
The original NES was a gray rectangular box. The cartridges were put into the side-loading flap and pushed down before the system could be started. A second version of this machine, released in 1993, was top-loading. Although it was smaller, cheaper, and more resistant to dust-related problems, it was dropped by Nintendo entirely in 1994.
